چکیده

INTRODUCTION Patients with type 1 diabetes have shown decreased bone mineral density (BMD) values. The need for orthodontic treatment in diabetic patients is usually associated with occlusal problems and the occurrence of abnormalities in the development of the jaws. The aim of this study was to analyze bone response of insulin-treated and untreated diabetic rats after applying orthodontic forces. METHODS Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: experimental orthodontics, experimental diabetes and orthodontics, and experimental diabetes treated with insulin and experimental orthodontics. Orthodontic forces were applied the first day of the seventh week. Forty-eight hours after placement, all the animals were killed, and the maxillae were excised and processed using routine histologic techniques. RESULTS Bone activity in the periodontal cortex of the dental alveolus showed a significant decrease in bone formation and erosive areas in diabetic animals as compared with controls. A recovery of these parameters could be observed in the group with experimental diabetes treated with insulin and experimental orthodontics. Bone volume in the interradicular bone showed no significant differences among groups. CONCLUSIONS People with diabetes should not receive orthodontic treatment until their metabolic status normalizes. Bone response to orthodontic forces in insulin-treated diabetic subjects does not differ significantly from that observed in healthy subjects.

Alcohol Induced Osteopenia Can Cause Accelerated Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Male Wistar Rats

Background and Aim: Considering the effect of alcohol on bones, consuming alcohol may have some consequences on orthodontic tooth movement. The present study was aimed to evaluate the effect of alcohol consumption on bone density and orthodontic tooth movement in rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, thirty rats were divided into three groups and underwent 3 weeks of diffe...

The Effect of Quinapril on the Aortic Contractile Response of Streptozotocin-Diabetic Rats

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors appear to correct many of the abnormalities associated with the vascular dysfunction found in diabetic patients. In this respect, quinapril is a unique ACE inhibitor with multiple protective effects. The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of intraperitoneal administration of quinapril on the aortic reactivity of streptozotocin ...

The possible acute analgesic effect of pepper, tarragon, and chard in streptozotocin-diabetic rats using hot plate test

Diabetic rats in long-term display an augmented nociceptive response to thermal stimuli. Furthermore, hyperalgesia is one of the major symptoms of diabetic neuropathy in some patients. Considering the antidiabetic potential of medicinal plants chard, pepper, and tarragon, this study was undertaken to evaluate the possible analgesic effect of chard-, pepper-, and/or tarragon-mixed food intake in...

Orthodontic Forces Induce the Cytoprotective Enzyme Heme Oxygenase-1 in Rats

Orthodontic forces disturb the microenvironment of the periodontal ligament (PDL), and induce craniofacial bone remodeling which is necessary for tooth movement. Unfortunately, orthodontic tooth movement is often hampered by ischemic injury and cell death within the PDL (hyalinization) and root resorption. Large inter-individual differences in hyalinization and root resorption have been observe...
